In year eight we started the year off by reading a book called Esperanza Rising. This book is about a girl how is called Esperanza. In the beginning of the book she is rich and lives on a vineyard in Aguascalientes called El Rancho de las Rosas, owned by her dad. Terrible things happen to her family like her dad dies and her house is burnt down. This has changed her life entirely because now she has had to move to California, work to make money and be the poor. This is a real shock to her because she is used to going to a public school, laying at home doing nothing and having lots of servants. We have done a few activities such as washing clothes, brushing up dirt and onion skins and making tortillas. You will see a movie of this activity if you go to this address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk7Wp1chmSY.
Develop and adapt active reading skills and strategies:
Today in class we were talking about reading strategies. They are “Ask Questions, Make Connections, Summarize, Clarify, Predict and Visualize”. I used “Summarize” which is retelling what happened in the story. I used summarize a lot in class discussion and blog posts. I think this was good for me because then I got to see the book through my own eyes instead of the teachers.I the next book I read I am going to start summarizing the night we read the book and do it every night from then on. I used most of the reading strategies but I had trouble with visualizing because I did not have time to draw a picture or find a picture on the internet that relates to the part of the book that we were reading. So, next book we read I am going to visualize more.
Understand and respond to ideas, viewpoints, themes and purposes in texts:
Relate texts to the social, historical and cultural contexts in which they were written:
Soial hierarchy is very important all over the world. In Esperanza Rising class is very important. This is because Esperanza’s life changes entirety when she has to change her position in class.
Analyze how writers’ use of linguistic and literary features shapes and influences meaning:
My first simile is “But know that she was a young women, she understood that Miguel was the housekeeper’s son and she was the ranch owner’s daughter and between then ran a deep river.” To me this means that Esperanza’s wish to marry Miguel was never going to happen.
My second simile is “… Tio Macro, who was a few years younger and not as smart, always followed his older brother’s lead, like un burro, a donkey. To me this means he was not very smart.
My third simile is “… a small beacon of hope swaying in the darkness.” In my mind it looks like a tiny light moving forward.
