Catch Up 1

February 1, 2011 by · 1 Comment · Life

As you can see by the title of this blog it is a “Catch Up” blog. I will do one of these when i have been too busy to pit on a post for various reasons. So the last couple of weeks i have been having to study for tests I have my French one tomorrow I am absolutely dreading it.

Over the last couple of weeks I have not done much but get very excited over the fact that Australia lost the Asian cup to Japan. This has surprised people at school though because I am a New Zealander you would think that I would want Australia to win, but ever since I heard that Australia was in the Asian cup I didn’t want them to win.

Also I have written my first song. I have only got the piano part of it.

First Draft of James’ Song

Hopefully you all enjoyed that. I am working on the guitar part at the moment (Did I tell you that I played the guitar. Well that give me something to talk about next week. You see the pictures that are up the top of my blog they are of my electric guitar I also play acoustic guitar and also the ukulele which I found out was a type of acoustic guitar.) I am also trying to put together some lyrics for my song. I am hoping to play the at the end of year concert.

That is all I have to say for today so see you next week or even before.

For those of you that dont know what a ukulele looks like hear is a picture:

UKULELE The ukulele is a four stringed guitar. The two strings in the middle are thicker than the outer two.

Hear is a song on the ukulele:

Now for those of you how read this it is pretty random. I am not going to be doing it like once a month I will try to do one a week if there is something to talk about. I have to go now see you next week.

Well I don’t really know what to say… I have just been reading to old friends blogs: Jabiz Raisdana and Temijuopelo. When reading them it made me realize how useful a blog can be. They do some thing so easy. You can communicate with people and  get all your emotions out. You are free you can tell the world whatever you want and you fell good about it. Here is a piece of music that I really like:

I am going to start using this a lot more but for now I have nothing else to say.

James and JamesFor the past few weeks, we’ve been working on an assessment that involves our reflection on Doha week. Doha week was a week where the school arranged ranges of activities. Me & my partner: James M. decided to have our reflection in a form of a podcast. A podcast asking questions about the Doha week activities. This is the podcast:

My Life in the Future

May 12, 2010 by · 7 Comments · English, Homework

In the last couple of English lessons we have been reading a book called “The Giver.” We have only read to chapter ten so I can only give a brief explanation about it. The Giver is about a boy of eleven years of age called Jonas. He lives in a community that has lots of rules and is perfect. Each December all the citizens go to a big auditorium and go up a year. Say for instance the ones go to be twos. When they turn twelve they get assigned their jobs. Jonas was not assigned job he was selected. He got to become the next Receiver of Memory.

After having read this chapter our teacher asked us to write about our own future. He asked us what plans/expectations do you have for your future? He asked us what are our dreams and how are those ideas influenced? He also asked us what other expectations do you feel are put on you by your parents, culture, or school?

My plans for my future are vague. But I would like to become an actor.  This has been influenced by the school plays I have been in. Even though I have not been in very many now that I am “Bugsy Malone” in “Bugsy Malone” I have found that it is fun to be on stage and produce a show. After that when I feel that I am too old I want to become an author. The first book that I want to write is going to be called “A War Creating Pollution.” It is going to explain the war that Capital and Communism have been having since the the Industrial Revolution started and how it is creating so much pollution that humans are not going to be able to live on the earth much longer. But I also want it to tell people that there is still hope and if we slow down the process of production we will as humans live on the earth much longer. If we can do this we will not only save our species we will save the world around us. Now people have trouble understanding what the world is. I am not going to go in to depth on that topic now but is you read my book (which I hope to publish by the time I am fifteen). The person who inspired me to write this book is my English teacher “Jabiz Raisdana.” He is a man who has opened my eyes to the world it really is. That is why i want to dedicate the book to him.

As for the last question I was asked I feel that that my parents want me to be successful. To me the word “successful” means to have a good job that gets enough money for a enjoyable life. Also I think it means that once I do retire I will have some thing to do. I think my plans for my future all come under this definition. Also my parents want me to have a good education. To me this means that I have to try harder at school. I think that my teachers at school want very much the same for me as my parents. I think that my school expects me to listen to the teachers and take in what they say.

To finish this post I whant to ask who ever is reading this post “What do you want to do in your future?’ Please leave your answers in the comments box.

Skateboarding

May 5, 2010 by · No Comments · Assessments, English, Homework

There are many different brands of skateboards. The brand of the skateboard is everything! Skateboards are an excellent way to show yourself to the world by the colours that are on the picture on the bottom of each of the boards. All of the pictures use the brands logo. It determines how a person can express their feelings. Skateboard company’s try to make the most expressive boards. I suppose that it is the nature of the people buying the board that chooses the board. Black and blue, pink and purple, yellow and red, orange and colorful pictures on the bottom, grip tape on top is what makes a skateboard. There is a skateboard for everyone. There is also this tape called grip tape. It can be any colour that you want it to be. It is sticky on one side and sand papery/ rough on the other. It depends on what the person likes that will have a big influence on the board bought. World Industries and Element make the best quality boards, clothes and merchandise. They are very successful brands. They have been able to advertise and sponsor all over the world. They sell there products in different countries. Element, World Industries or Birdhouse let people create there own boards. The company’s will give the person a blank board and the person will select the wheels, trucks, picture (you can make your own picture) and the grip tape. An individual will make the smashing big hit board or the fairy princess board. World Industries have the best most catchy looking boards. They have the coolest logo of all the skateboard company’s. It looks like a smiley face that is on fire. Each brand makes boards different so that people can choose what they like the best.

See the spinning wheels go round and round. The trucks connect them to the board. When people make skateboards they make sure that the wheels are not too big or too small. If they are too big they won’t turn and if they are to small the board will not work. The trucks are normally in relation to the wheels so that the wheels spin. Sometimes the trucks have a riser pad to make the board further away from the wheels, so that they do not touch the board. The curves on the end of the board are never to steep or to shallow. This is so that you can do tricks on the board. The wood that the board is also very important. If it is to weak or thin it will break. 90% of the whole skateboard is made of Canadian Maple. The trunk of the tree is thick and strong good for making skateboards.

There are different types of tricks. Here are the two I know- Ollie and Kick flip. When you want to do a Ollie you have to position your feet on the board correctly. First you have to put your stronger foot on the back of your board. Secondly you put your other foot in the middle of the board. Then you crouch down on the board and lean back. Finally jump up and push your foot down on the back of the board then the front. Your board should lift off the ground and then you have done a Ollie. A Kick flip is very much like an Ollie except that you put your back foot on the corner opposite your heel. Another trick I know is a grind. There is a problem with the grind. It is that you need to have a grind pipe or a very low step. There is one trick that you have to be moving to do. It is a manual. To do it you have to be moving and leaning back on you board.

Voice & Word Choice

February 27, 2010 by · No Comments · English, Homework

Big voiceConfusing words

Lately in class I have been writing a magazine article about something I enjoy. I am writing about skateboarding and the design of skateboards. To write the article I have been using the six traits of writing. The first two traits are “Ideas” and “Organization.” (You can read my paragraphs about them below.) The third and forth are “Voice” and “Word Choice.” I will be writing about these two traits together because the words you choose affect the way something sounds or what voice it has. So for example if you were writing about global warming you would use words like “…depressing the world” or “…eating away at the earth.” But then you wouldn’t use words such as “…awesome…” or “…hard rock…” because it is not the type of voice that you want your readers to interpret. These words would be more appropriate in a article about skateboarding or BMX bike riding. Now this is where synonyms come in handy. For those of  you that don’t know what a synonym is, another word that has a similar meaning to the word that you want to use. They are good when you want to use a type of voice but don’t know the right word. You have to be careful when you use a synonym because you have to make sure that it is in the right context. An example is the word cool it could be cool as awesome or cool as in it is cold.

Organization

February 7, 2010 by · No Comments · English, Homework

In the organization part of the magazine article Formwe used a facts chart. We used supporting facts fore our ideas.

I also made a survey with questions. This is it: MY SURVEY. We also used transitions. Here is a list.

Ideas

January 17, 2010 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

It is very important to get a clear and focused idea. this is how I got my idea for my piece of writing.

Firstly I started with a broad topic sentence.

“I am going to talk about skateboarding.”

Secondly I split it into four smaller categories.

“Skate shoes, skateboard design, skate helmets and skate wheels.”

These categories were still too broad. So I choose one of these topics to talk about.

“Skateboard design”

After this I split this again but into five categories.

“Picture on the bottom of skateboard, color of grip tape, curves on the end of board, size of the wheels and trucks and the brand of the board.”

Then I got two different ideas the t I could use to build up my topic sentence.

“Expression through artwork and functionality.”

Then I came up with my topic sentence.

“Skateboarding, 1 skater, 1 board, lots of personality.”

Esperanza Rising Final Assessment

December 10, 2009 by · No Comments · Assessments, English, Esperanza Rising, Uncategorized

In year eight we started the year off by reading a book called Esperanza Rising. This book is about a girl how is called Esperanza. In the beginning of the book she is rich and lives on a vineyard in Aguascalientes called El Rancho de las Rosas, owned by her dad. Terrible things happen to her family like her dad dies and her house is burnt down. This has changed her life entirely because now she has had to move to California, work to make money and be the poor. This is a real shock to her because she is used to going to a public school, laying at home doing nothing and having lots of servants. We have done a few activities such as washing clothes, brushing up dirt and onion skins and making tortillas. You will see a movie of this activity if you go to this address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk7Wp1chmSY.

Develop and adapt active reading skills and strategies:

Today in class we were talking about reading strategies. They are “Ask Questions, Make Connections, Summarize, Clarify, Predict and Visualize”. I used “Summarize” which is retelling what happened in the story. I used summarize a lot in class discussion and blog posts. I think this was good for me because then I got to see the book through my own eyes instead of the teachers.I the next book I read I am going to start summarizing the night we read the book and do it every night from then on. I used most of the reading strategies but I had trouble with visualizing because I did not have time to draw a picture or find a picture on the internet that relates to the part of the book that we were reading. So, next book we read I am going to visualize more.

Understand and respond to ideas, viewpoints, themes and purposes in texts:

Relate texts to the social, historical and cultural contexts in which they were written:

Soial hierarchy is very important all over the world. In Esperanza Rising class is very important. This is because Esperanza’s life changes entirety when she has to change her position in class.

Analyze how writers’ use of linguistic and literary features shapes and influences meaning:

My first simile is “But know that she was a young women, she understood that Miguel was the housekeeper’s son and she was the ranch owner’s daughter and between then ran a deep river.” To me this means that Esperanza’s wish to marry Miguel was never going to happen.

james

My second simile is “… Tio Macro, who was a few years younger and not as smart, always followed his older brother’s lead, like un burro, a donkey. To me this means he was not very smart.

james 2

My third simile is “… a small beacon of hope swaying in the darkness.” In my mind it looks like a tiny light moving forward.
